As for B&W Overlay Technique has Richard Corben made black line drawings for his B&W comics and shaded them with computer.
Richard Corben used sometimes as a part of pictures kind of zip-a-tone effect with dithering. Already with an early version of Corel Draw you could make the effect. See the modern way to do it Photoshop. Read more about dither from Wikipedia.
