Blue Line Coloring

In the Blue Line Coloring method (Coleur Direct in French) the artwork is produced as line art on paper, generally Bristol board. After it is photographed (or photo stated), it is printed twice: in watercolor friendly paper in blue color (hence the name) and in an acetate sheet in black and white. The artist then colors the blue version of the drawing, typically with watercolor, but also with other liquid media that can include airbrush or markers. The acetate layer with the line art is placed over it to see what it would look like printed. When it is completed, the color plates (CMY) are shot from the watercolor painting and the original black line art is used as the black plate.
